In case you feel the need to learn Cyrillic or curious about it, read one blogger’s trying to learn “h is X, n is H and z is 3.” Cool huh?

The hardest part of learning the Cyrillic alphabet hasn’t been the funny symbols: the Latin symbols are the hardest to remember. For example, the letter ?, which is the Latin letter Dž, is easy to remember because it looks like the football uprights and the letter ? reminds me of a squished bug. The challenge comes from trying to convince my English speaking brain that h is X, n is H, r is P and s is C. While the Latin alphabet is predominantly used in Bosnia & Herzegovina, having a basic understanding of the Cyrillic alphabet is helpful as many of the street signs and government buildings in Serbia are written in Cyrillic.

He also suggests other software and books to learn this uh-what-is-that language. [read]

You don’t have to know Cyrillic to survive in Sarajevo because they use the Latin alphabet there. As long as you stay put in the Federation territory, you will be just find. But in case your mind starts wondering and your feet wandering to the Serb-controlled Republika Srpska, than one or two Cyrillic under your belt won’t hurt. There are a few places worth visiting in the RS such as Sebrenica, the Olympic mountain Jahorina, the National Park Sutjeska, Banja Luka, etc. Moreover, Sarajevo is only a few kilometers away from the RS.

When you travel to Sarajevo, unless you come from the west part, you will pass Republika Srpska.
